When the Sparrow Falls

"Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.

[Mt. 10:28-33 NKJV]

Walking along on a country lane

I spied something small and brown.

A sparrow had fallen from the sky

And lay in the dust by the side of the road.

When had its small heart beat its last

A hundred feet up? Or here near the grass?

That would have gently cushioned its fall

More than the stony hard road.

Where was the last its call was heard

Aloft with the flock? Or safe in its nest?

Or was its last cry choked off by the dust

Here by the side of the silent road.

What was the urge it followed that day?

The search for its mate? The desire to play?

Or was it a flight to a sunnier place

Cut short by its plunge to the road.

There's One who could answer these questions of mine

He heard that last call, saw a sunbeam shine

On dull brown wings that swept the air

With fragile power but now lie still by the road.

He heard the last heartbeat. He knows the place

Where the little brown sparrow rests.

He's the Father of all. He cares for each one -

The strong and the weak, in the flock and alone.

He knows how it is when people pass by

And see one dead at the side of the road.

For His own Son died in just such a place

So that those who stop can find his grace.
