In June 2006, my husband and I spent a week sight-seeing on the Bay of Fundy coast of New Brunswick. There are quite a few old covered bridges in that area which were a real novelty for us. These bridges protect the roads from severe weather, keeping drivers safe from the slippery conditions of rain or ice and preventing deterioration of the wooden bridge itself.

I began to think about that in relation to my spiritual life in Christ. Before I put my trust in the Lord, my life was slipping into not only unsafe but dangerous places. I was deteriorating. There were so many choices and staying on the right road was difficult. But when I came to Jesus, He began to direct me along a safer road. Under His wings, I take refuge and He covers me just like the bridge covers and protects the road and those passing through it.
On a very rainy maritime day, when you enter a covered bridge the conditions momentarily change. The road for a short distance before you is unaffected by the weather outside, but when you leave the covered area once again you are unprotected. How reassuring it is to know that once we have given the care of our lives over to the Lord He directs our paths, guides us up and over the hurdles, around the dangerous obstacles, carries us during those times we slip and when we come out the other side it is into eternity with Him.
What a God!
His road stretches straight and smooth.
Every GOD-direction is road-tested.
Everyone who runs toward Him makes it.
